Is the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (often called the “Pfizer vaccine”) being distributed on campus FDA approved?
Yes, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (often called the “Pfizer vaccine”) being distributed on campus is FDA approved. We understand there has been some confusion regarding the Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) name change. According to the CDC, there has been no change in the formulation of the vaccine since the name change.
COMIRNATY is the brand name for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval on August 23, 2021, for individuals 16 years of age and older. Once vaccines are approved by the FDA, companies can market the vaccines under brand names. Now that the FDA-authorized Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the FDA for individuals 16 years of age and older, it will be marketed as COMIRNATY. See this FDA letter for additional information.
Can I receive a second dose of a vaccine on campus if I received my first dose elsewhere?
The University Health Center Pharmacy may be able to request a certain kind of vaccine for you. Please call the University Health Center Pharmacy at 662-915-5279 to check on the availability of the vaccine you need.
Can someone be required to disclose their vaccination status?
Current guidance considers an individual’s vaccination status protected personal information. As a result, individuals should not be asked about vaccination status. The university continues to encourage everyone on campus to follow protocols for the spaces in which they work or study to prevent the virus from spreading. If the protocols for a particular space are unclear, please email c19@olemiss.edu. University officials will continue to follow developments and guidance on vaccination status and disclosure.
Do I need to get a COVID-19 vaccine booster?
Currently, the CDC is recommending that adults ages 18 and up should get a booster dose after the appropriate amount of time has passed since their last dose of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine. See here for more details.
What is the current status of vaccine rollout in Mississippi?
Currently, all Mississippians ages 5 and above are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at MSDH COVID-19 vaccination clinics throughout the state. Schedule an appointment here.
How is the university managing vaccines on campus?
The university assembled a Vaccine Distribution and Administration Task Force, which developed a strategy to provide ample opportunities for faculty, staff, and students of the university to be immunized using the supply of vaccines provided by the Mississippi Department of Health.
How will the campus be notified of vaccine updates and availability?
Any updates or new information will be pushed out through normal UM communications, and you can also check out this page dedicated to our vaccine rollout plan. As with everything during the pandemic, information is constantly and rapidly changing, and we are doing our best to adapt and keep our community informed.
Which COVID-19 vaccines are recognized in the United States?
