Student, Employee Test Positive for COVID-19
In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the following emergency notification was issued:
The welfare and safety of our community during this time is our primary concern. We are writing to inform you of recent developments relating to COVID-19.
The University of Mississippi received notification today, June 3, 2020, that a student and an employee both tested positive for COVID-19. The Mississippi State Department of Health is currently conducting contact tracing and will communicate with those who may have been in close contact with these individuals.
We take this opportunity to remind our community of important information regarding COVID-19. In an effort to slow the spread of the virus, we are requesting your immediate attention to and compliance with the following health-authority-recommended practices – not only to ensure your own well-being but the well-being of others:
  • Engage in social distancing of six or more feet. 
  • Wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. 
  • Stay home when ill or if other family members are ill.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 
  • Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Watch for cough, troubled breathing, or other signs of respiratory infection.
  • Monitor temperature for a fever above 100.4 degrees F (38 degrees C).

Campus Green Spaces
The Grove, Circle and other green spaces on campus will be following current local and state guidance concerning group gatherings:
  • Group Gatherings (Social Distancing IS NOT Possible): Public and private social gatherings and recreational activities shall be limited to groups of no more than 20 people in a singe indoor space or groups of no more than 50 people in an outdoor space where individuals are in close proximity (less than six feet) to each other.
  • Group Gatherings (Social Distancing IS Possible): Except as otherwise provided, public and private social gatherings and recreational activities shall be limited to groups of no more than 50 people in a single indoor space or groups of no more than 100 people in an outdoor space where individuals are able to maintain a minimum of six feet separation.

Please do your part to slow the spread of the coronavirus by practicing social distancing. Thank you for taking steps to protect the health of our community.

Virtual Career Center Drop-In Hours
The Career Center will now host virtual drop-in hours for students starting June 2. The drop-in hours are scheduled for Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.  Please email office@career.olemiss.edu to gain access to the sessions.

COVID-19 and CARES Act Funding Opportunities
UM personnel who would like to be notified about funding opportunities related to COVID-19 or the CARES Act are invited to subscribe to UM’s weekly COVID-19 Pivot newsletter e-mail. There are currently at least 28 such opportunities that academic institutions are eligible to apply for and where Mississippi is an eligible activity location. Sponsors range from the USDA to the U.S. Department of Education to the Institute of Museum and Libraries Services. New subcommittee added to Future Planning Task Force

As part of the university’s Future Planning Task Force, a new Public Education and Awareness Subcommittee is forming to promote and drive adoption of the operational parameters and protocols needed to protect the health and safety of all members of the university community and its visitors.

The subcommittee includes academic and campus administrators and faculty members with relevant fields of expertise, Student Affairs program leaders, Marketing & Communications professionals and leaders from student organizations. The subcommittee is co-chaired by Natasha Jeter, assistant vice chancellor for wellness and student success, and Jim Zook, chief marketing and communications officer.

On May 21, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning passed a resolution stating the Board’s intention that all eight public universities resume traditional operations on their campuses in Fall 2020.

CARES Act update
  • As of May 13, the university has disbursed $2,181,503 in emergency assistance grants to 1,436 students through funding provided by the federal CARES Act.
  • FAQs have been added to the COVID-19 site related to the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The Ole Miss Golf Course
The Ole Miss Golf Course is open under limited operations, including modified hours, procedures and policies. The driving range/short game facilities remain closed at this time, and tee times can be booked online. For more information, see this list of requirements.

The Inn at Ole Miss
The Inn at Ole Miss is now accepting reservations for arrivals. At this time, the Inn is unable to offer complimentary breakfast. For more information, visit the Inn’s website.

Student Housing Spring 2020 Checkout Continues
Spring 2020 checkout is underway for residents of Student Housing. Appointments are available through the Student Housing portal in two-hour increments from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. CDT through Sunday, May 31. A limited number of students can select each appointment time in keeping with CDC guidelines of limiting the number of people in a single area at one time. COVID-19 Emergency Z and P grading options
Students have the opportunity to convert one or more letter grades to a Z or P under the COVID-19 Emergency grading options. Through May 18, students can access their final grades on MyOleMiss and change individual letter grades that are eligible to be converted a Z or P grade, based on the final letter grade assigned by faculty. Visit the Keep Learning site for more information.

UM Research Town Hall set for May 14
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is conducting town hall meetings via Zoom to discuss topics of current interest to the campus research and sponsored programs community. Gov. Tate Reeves issued Executive Order 1480 extending the “Safer at Home Order” for two more weeks until Monday, May 25. The order lays out guidelines and protocols for salons, barbershops and gyms to reopen.

The City of Oxford approved a sixth COVID-19 emergency resolution, which includes a reopening of dining rooms while following strict guidelines in accordance with Gov. Reeves’ executive order 1480 and the “Serving Oxford Safely” Phase I recovery plan.

Celebrating our Graduates
The university is pleased to celebrate and honor our graduating students and encourages everyone to check out these events and platforms:
  • The university will host a live, online celebration for graduates, family and friends. The event will be livestreamed and feature remarks from Chancellor Glenn Boyce, Provost Noel Wilkin, Ole Miss graduates and other special guests. The event can be viewed online on Saturday, May 9 at noon.
  • In a celebration of this year’s graduating class, the university is highlighting students and their academic and personal journeys from Ole Miss student to Ole Miss graduate. The Journey to Commencement series chronicles the memories and impact made by the Class of 2020 during their time at Ole Miss.
  • The university has partnered with Merit Pages to provide customizable profile pages to celebrate graduation achievements. Graduates can share their accomplishment with friends and family through social or email.

IMC Student Class Project
Students in Kristen Swain’s integrated marketing communications writing class recently created “Pandemic Science Theater 2020,” a Facebook page to engage public audiences with biology-related Netflix documentaries during the pandemic and raise awareness of their class client, the UM Biology Department. Student reviews are posted on Facebook.

Student Housing Spring 2020 Checkout
The university has shared a detailed plan for Spring 2020 checkout. Appointments are available through the Student Housing portal in two-hour increments from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. CDT from Monday, May 11 through Sunday, May 31. A limited number of students will be able to select each appointment time in keeping with CDC guidelines of limiting the number of people in a single area at one time.
At the time of checkout:
  • Bring your Ole Miss Student ID with you at your scheduled appointment time. This will be used to access your building and room.
  • Bring no more than two (2) additional people. Please follow CDC guidelines and do not bring anyone who has a compromised immune system, has been in contact with anybody who may have tested positive, or who has exhibited COVID-19 symptoms within 14 days of your appointment.
  • Per CDC and MSDH guidelines, students and guests will need to wear masks or similar face coverings— including homemade masks, scarves, or bandanas.
  • Be prepared with boxes, tape and other moving supplies. These items may not be readily available in Oxford.
  • Bring a dolly, handcart, or furniture mover to aid in removing large or heavy items.

Student Emergency Grant Assistance
Funds are available through the federal CARES Act and Rebel Relief. Students can apply online for an emergency assistance grant. Students with questions can email umcares@olemiss.edu.

Moving Forward with Research and Sponsored Programming

Call for Disaster Resilience Round 3 Grant Proposals
The Disaster Resilience Constellation (DRC) seeks to encourage and support interdisciplinary research efforts that will result in the development of new knowledge, resources, technologies, decision-support tools, and policies to mitigate disasters and increase the resilience and sustainability of communities.
The DRC has funded two previous seed grant competition rounds since 2018. For Round 3, the DRC invites any faculty member who is eligible to serve as a Principal Investigator to submit or lead a proposal under either of two tracks—Standard Track and Covid-19 Track. Previous DRC participation is not required. See the Round 3 Request for Proposals (RFP) for requirements and submission instructions.
